YouTube is one of the most popular video streaming platforms out there. Billions of people use it every day, but sometimes YouTube users may face problems like no sound on YouTube.
In this article, we will discuss some possible reasons and the fixes for YouTube volume issue. So if you’re ready to go “all-in” to learn about the fixes, this post is for you.
5 Top Reasons for Sound Problem
YouTube being one of the largest video sharing networks often faces sound issues from users. 2 billion monthly logged-in users.
Why?
Let’s look at some of the major reasons:
Video itself is muted for the browser
System sound is muted
Outdated version of Flash player causing incompatibility
System configuration is not correct
Broken sound card or earlier version of Sound card driver
Now that we know the causes, let’s see how to fix them.
For all the below solutions, make sure you restart the computer for changes to take effect.
Solution 1: Check your YouTube Volume isn’t turned off
If you’re having trouble hearing sound on YouTube, the first thing to check is the volume settings. YouTube sound may be turned off.
Ensure that the speaker icon at the bottom left corner of the YouTube video is not muted. If you find the speaker icon with sound off, click on the mute button to unmute the video.
Solution 2: Use another web browser on your computer
The next thing you can try is using a different web browser. For example, if you’re using Chrome, you can switch to Firefox or other browsers such as Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, DuckDuckgo, or Opera and see if the video plays with sound.
If it does, then the issue is likely with your previous browser. This is a quick and easy fix that’s worth trying before doing anything else.
Solution 3: Check the System Sound
The next thing to check is if your system audio is playing the audio for the selected playback device.
This is what I mean. If your playback device is Speakers, we need to test if your system is producing the sound.
Go to Settings > System
On the left panel, look for Sound.
On the right side, under Related Settings, tap on Sound Control Panel.
A popup window appears.
Tap on the Playback tab.
A list of playback devices will show up.
Click on the current default device and tap on Configure.
In my case, it is Speakers. If you have headphones connected follow the same steps.
Choose the audio channel and click Test. You will also click the Left or Right speaker to hear the sound.
If it plays as expected, your system sounds are ok.
Great.
Sound problems can quickly make your experience frustrating. So it is worth investigating the next important thing.
Sound Mixer.
If your browser’s sound is muted, and your YouTube is not, regardless of how much you raise the volume, it will not have any sound.
Here’s why!
Solution 4: Increase Volume In Sound Mixer
Go to the Settings app.
Start typing volume mixer in the search bar and look for “Sound mixer options“.
Clicking it, App volume and device preferences appear. Here you will see all your apps on your computer that require sound. Google Chrome is one of them.
If you mute the Google Chrome app here and then try to play a YouTube video, you will not get any sound.
Ensure that this is not muted and using the volume slider increase the volume level to your desire.
This should fix your issue. If not, you need to proceed to the next option.
Solution 5: Use an Incognito Window To Fix No Sound On YouTube
Try using an incognito window. An incognito window is a special browser mode that disables the storage of your browsing information, including saved data like saved login credentials and cookies. This means that setting up a fresh session will help to eliminate any variables that might be causing issues with sound on YouTube. To switch to an incognito window,
Open your Chrome browser and select & click the vertical three dots on the extreme top right-hand corner of your screen.
Tap on “New Incognito Window” or use the keypad to enter Ctrl +Shift+N
Use this window to play your YouTube video.
For Firefox, select New Private Window. The rest of the steps are the same.
Solution 6: Increase Volume In Volume Mixer
Now, this is similar to the Sound Mixer, we discussed earlier. Just that it resides in the taskbar.
On the Taskbar at the bottom right-hand corner look for a Speaker icon.
Right click on it to Open Volume Mixer.
Check if your default browser is muted. Increase system volume as required.
Solution 7: Update Adobe Flash Player
In case of Windows 10, the updates are not installed automatically in the background. Hence, it is a good idea to check for updates manually from time to time.
Outdated Adobe Flash Player is also one of the reasons you might encounter no sound on YouTube while using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox browser.
Here are the steps to update Adobe Flash Player:
From Start, go to Settings >Update & Security
Look for any updates under Windows Updates by clicking Check for updates.
So yeah, that’s YouTube Volume: my go-to troubleshooting strategy right now.
Now I’d like to hear from you.
