Why You Should Get an HBO Max Subscription

HBO Max, since its inception in 2020, has garnered a solid reputation from users and critics alike, for its vast, robust library of both commercially successful and critically acclaimed blockbusters, along with classics too.

As you’ll read down our list of best movies, we’ve made sure to include a few of both, so that you are spoiled for choice.

HBO Max has played host to not only older HBO content (it has everything on any kind of HBO) as well as fresh releases (many films were released on streaming service platforms, and HBO Max had its fair share of releases as well), which included new releases as well as originals.

Our list spans across thrillers, epic action, drama, to biographical cinema, and many more. So, make sure to check out every entry.

There is something for almost every kind of film buff on HBO Max.

Best HBO Max Movies You Might Like

Here are my top picks of best movies on HBO Max right now.

hbo max movies

Dune (2021; dir: Denis Villeneuve)

Genre: Sci-fi

Dune follows a gifted young man on his journey to the most dangerous planet in his universe; meanwhile, conflict arises around the most precious resource in existence: the “spice.”

Villeneuve has painstakingly created a perfect, live-action representation of Frank Herbert’s allegorical universe.

With films like Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival already under his belt, this time, Villeneuve seems to have created a familiar landscape to explore the issues that plague society while designing the perfect alien, unfamiliar, uncanny metaphor in an imaginary universe.

In the Heights (2021; dir: Jon M. Chu)

Genre: Musical

Based on the Broadway musical of the same name by Quiara Alegría Hudes and Lin-Manuel Miranda, In the Heights is directed by the same guy who made Crazy Rich Asians.

This movie revolves around the dreams and aspirations of the residents of Washington Heights, from the point of view of Usnavi de la Vega, played by Anthony Ramos.

Promising Young Woman (2020; dir: Emerald Fennell)

Genre: black comedy, psychological crime thriller

(TW: Suicide, sexual assault/rape) This critically acclaimed thriller follows the story of Cassie Thomas, played by Carry Mulligan (of Great Gatsby fame), who goes on a “vigilante” spree to avenge her best friend, who had been raped and had later committed suicide.

This movie was nominated for the Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay, Picture, Actress, Director, and Editing (all the major ones), and won in the Screenplay category. Enough said I guess.

The Suicide Squad (2021; dir: James Gunn)

Genre: Superhero, action, adventure, DC comics, DC Universe

(TW: Extreme violence, gore) This movie comes with gratuitous violence and some really great action choreography.

And, of course, how does one make a movie the baddest DC supervillains, or “rogue justice league,” without having an incredible cast?

The film features the creme-de-la-creme of Hollywood: Idris Elba (Deadshot), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), and John Cena (Peacemaker), among others.

Godzilla vs. Kong (2021; dir: Adam Wingard)

Genre: Kaiju, monster, action

A sequel to Kong: Skull Island (2017) and Godzilla: King of Monsters (2019): King Kong has been captured (from the previous movie), while Godzilla resurfaces and starts wreaking havoc.

This causes humans to seek the giant ape’s help to rescue themselves from Godzilla.

Apart from being the eighth highest grossing film of 2021, it was a major streaming hit on HBO Max, before being overtaken by Mortal Kombat.

Judas and the Black Messiah (2021; dir: Shaka King)

Genre: Drama, biographical, tragedy, history, civil rights movement

One of the great films of the modern era, JATBM revolves around Fred Hampton, the chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, the radical Black civil rights movement group, and his subsequent betrayal by William “Bill” O’Neal, a thief-turned-FBI-informant.

This high adrenaline political thriller stands out for its excellent script, stellar cast and performances; it won Daniel Kaaluya a Golden Globe, BAFTA, SAG, Critic’s Choice, and an Academy Award.

This would probably be at the top of my list, if this were a ranked list.

Jackie Brown (1997; dir: Quentin Tarantino)

Genre: Crime, thriller, action

A typical Tarantino-action-comedy-philosophy fest, the movie revolves around the titular Jackie Brown, a middle-aged flight attendant involved in shady businesses, and how she redeems herself from the criminals she associates with.

This movie was responsible not only for resurrecting Pam Grier and Robert Forster’s careers but also won Forster a nomination for the Academy Award for an Actor in a Supporting Role.

Also, watch it for Robert de Niro and Samuel L. Jackson, whose roles are … well, wacky.

The Matrix Resurrections (2021; dir: Lana Wachowski)

Genre: Sci-Fi, action

A great sequel to the original trilogy, this takes place sixty years after the events of the third film, which was released in 2003.

Starring veteran cast members, Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, and Carrie-Anne Moss, and featuring new faces like Jessica Henwick (GoT and Marvel Cinematic Universe fame), Yahya Abdul Mateen-II (the Trial of the Chicago 7), and Priyanka Chopra (Quantico and Baywatch fame), the fourth addition to the Matrix franchise is a must-watch!

Availability: HBO Max

No Sudden Move (2021; dir: David Soderbergh)

Genre: Period crime thriller

From the maker of the successful Ocean’s franchise, No Sudden Move is a neo-noir, crime thriller, set in ’50s America.

Starring the great Benicio del Toro (of Sicario, French Dispatch, and Guardians of the Galaxy fame) and the versatile Don Cheadle (War Machine from MCU), this period thriller explores racism and policing, while reminding one of the parallels in modern American society.

Some More Mentions of Great Movies on HBO Max

Some other films you can find and enjoy on the app are:

  1. Harry Potter Franchise: All eight films for modern audiences that grew up on the books and content franchise. If you ask me, Prisoner of Azkaban (dir: Alfonso Cuarón) is the greatest film in the series, and worth watching or rewatching the entire series alone.
  2. 2001: A Space Odyssey (dir: Stanley Kubrick): This is so famous and influential as a film that you can find tributes to it in almost every kind of content following it. Interestingly, one of the many tributes to this Sci-fi-meets-philosophical-drama is in Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, another film to catch on HBO Max, a film released 37 years after itself.
  3. Studio Ghibli: I think, and I cannot stress this enough, HBO Max is worth it just for this alone. You can find the entire Ghibli filmography on HBO Max. One can never tire of the beautiful animation and storytelling style of these films that are great for all ages and it would not be a stretch to call these classics.
  4. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and the Hobbit: There’s no better way to spend a weekend cooped up at home than watching these epic, mammoth trilogies. So let’s just talk about two anecdotes that we found interesting about these modern classics:
  • Sir Edmund Hillary, one of the first people to conquer Mt. Everest, makes a silent cameo appearance as one of the hobbits of the Shire in LOTR.
  • It was not World War II that inspired the war for the Ring. It was World War I. J.R.R Tolkien fought at the famous Battle of Somme, and it was his PTSD that is reflected in Frodo’s character.

In case we’ve piqued your interest, both trilogies are available on both HBO Max and the Hulu add-on.
